¶ Stenius (1540-1619) taught at several schools in Bautzen, Torgau, and Neubrandenburg. In 1585 he moved to Heidelberg university, where he had the chair for ethics, and became associate professor for Greek, Rhetoric and Poetics.

In his dedication to Abraham Faber from Erfurt Stenius writes that although Lucian’s dialogues are the best that can be achieved in this genre, they also pose a great danger to young people because of their godlessness and profanity. In order to benefit the studies of young people, he decided to write some 70 dialogues himself, in the language of the best Greek authors, and at the same time to provide them with something useful for their everyday lives.
