Meibom: 4to (203 x 158 mm). (16), CLXXXIV pp. Tiny hole in in K1, marginal tear in K3, watermargin in the outer blank  margin of four leaves (N1, N2, S1, S2). Printed in Latin with passages in Greek and Hebrew. Folded engraving by Romein de Hooghe showing five  separate sections of oared vessels. Contemporary vellum. A crisp copy. 

First edition of this early monograph on the ancient trireme (τριήρης), a warship with three rows of oars, manned with one per oar.

Opelius: 4to (198 x 150 mm). 34 pp. Leaves are toned, a few browned. Early 18th century calf, rebacked.

Provenance: Exlibris on fly-leaf Henri Lambert/Versailles. Paperstrip on bottom of title: „Ne extra hanc bibliothecam efferatur. Ex obedientia“. A cardinal’s arms on both covers.

Born in in 1621 Strasbourg Johannes Scheffer held the famous „Skytteanska professuren i statskunskap och vältalighet“ in Upsala from 1648 until his death in 1679. Among many editions of Greek & Latin Classics he published „De varietate navium“ in 1643, and „De militia navali veterum libri“ in 1654. The present work is a critical review of Meibom’s book.
