Binding – Orosius

Adversus paganos […] — Cologne 1536

2.400 €

Binding – Orosius, Paulus. Adversus paganos historiarum libri septem.  Cologne, Eucharius [Cervicornus] for Godefridus Hittorp, 1536.

8vo. (36) leaves., 367 p. Dampstaining to first and last leaves, light foxing throughout.

Provenance: Some characters and then Morales Pennalossa on title-page. A Jesuit Pennalossa is mentioned by Pascal in the 16th of his Lettres Provincales. A different name [Dazio del …?] in brown ink on the upper cover, faded and unreadable.

Binding: Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled brown calf over pasteboards. Panelled sides with large fleurons at inner and small fleurons at outer corners. Arabesque role between triple gilt filets. Centerpiece composed of 2 different stamps, using the large fleurons again. A hexagon in the inner rectangle made up by a gilt fillet, an unusual pattern. Blind fillets on spine.

Large fleurons: Similar to Marinis 858 (Bembo, Rome 1546). Role: Mazal, Europäische Einbandkunst, plate 95.

One small repair to lower left part of upper cover, two small repairs at foot of spine, one at head. Upper joint somewhat splitting towards top. Apparently a Roman binding.
