¶ „Editio princeps of the two principal works of the second-century Christian apologist, who blended Greek philosophical with Christian thoughts. In the Apology, addressed to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Athenagoras sought to rebut current accusations levelled aginst Christians: e. g., atheism, cannibalism, incest, etc.
The Latin translation of the Apology was commissioned by Henri Estienne from the eminent Swiss humanist, naturalist, and bibliographer, Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), who has added his textual comments on the Greek text. The second treatise, On the resurrection of the Dead, was translated by the Louvain scholar Pieter Nanning (Nannius, 1500-1557). The volume ends with 18 pages of critical notes on the Greekt text of both works, by Henri Estienne.“ (Schreiber)
