Editio princeps and first edition of Hephaistion’s Enchiridion.

8vo (165 x 98 mm). a-z A-F8;  A-F8, G4, but lacking G4, which has the repeated device: (232) leaves; (53) of (54) leaves.

Ms notes on s5 in lower margin; lower corner of s6 and D8 torn out, looks like a paper-flaw. Fore-margin of title-page trimmed, title-page slighlty spotted and dusty, first four and last four leaves a bit frayed in outer margin.

Greek type: Kallierges type of 1509 (20 lines = 88-90 mm).

Late 19th century vellum, spine lettered in gilt, bound by Henderson & Bisset (Edinburgh), their tiny stamp on paste-down.

Provenance: Campo Filippo Manati[i], Fir[enze] anno 1709 on verso of the contemporary fly-leaf.

Signature of the Scottish scholar John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895) on one of the three 19th century fly-leaves.

Six pages of ms. notes on Gaza, Hephaistion, and the Giunta  – according to the vendor’s information these notes are by William Graham (1855-1922).
